Railway Single Man Trains

With the need to reduce costs and increase efficiency, railway companies have seen the need to reduce the number of train personnel and operate a vehicle with only one engine driver. With this change came the necessity to increase safety systems; for example: when a train was stopped, the driver was under instruction to remove the hand portable radio from its holder and take it with them. Railway headquarters wanted to be made aware that the handset had been removed. Salcom developed a system whereby a notification was immediately sent to H.Q. and a timer was initiated. After three (3) minutes a caution was issued to both the Driver and Headquarters that the allowed time was nearly up and after four (4) minutes a “red alert” sounded.
