Niue, Pacific Disaster Risk Management Programme - Salcom

In the Pacific region, summer heralds not just blue skies and outdoor adventures, but also the onset of the rainy season and the looming threat of tropical cyclones from November to April.

This period brings with it an increased risk of severe weather events, with tropical depressions closely monitored for potential impact. Niue, situated in this region, relies heavily on its tsunami warning system to alert residents of tsunami threats, as well as to disseminate weather warnings and emergency alerts.

The system serves as a vital public address system, allowing authorities to swiftly communicate critical information to the public during emergencies. Recently, Salcom, through NEMA's Pacific Disaster Risk Management Programme, undertook the task of updating and testing Niue's tsunami warning system.

The comprehensive island-wide test and maintenance work conducted in late 2023 ensured that all system sites were fully operational and prepared to respond effectively to any emergency situation.

Salcom expresses deep gratitude to the collaborative efforts of various organizations involved in the Niue Tsunami Warning project, including the Niue Disaster Management Office (NDMO), Niue Telecom, Niue Police, Niue Power Corporation, the Government of Niue, New Zealand National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

These partnerships underscore the commitment to ensuring the safety and resilience of Niue's population in the face of natural disasters, reaffirming the importance of proactive disaster risk management in vulnerable regions.
