Railway Tunnel Radio System

Radio communication inside a long rail tunnel is impossible. To overcome this challenge, Salcom developed a system to fill in the “dead spot”. A radio repeater is positioned just inside the tunnel mouth, connected to a “leaky coaxial cable” (“leaky feeder”) which runs the length of the tunnel and acts as a long aerial. The tunnel radio repeater is connected to a link transmitter and receiver installed outside the tunnel, in order to communicate with the railway radio system. Various configurations are possible in order to match the requirements of each tunnel and can be made to incorporate an alarm, if so desired.
